The Marlborough Multicultural Centre (MMC) is proud to share that our Cultural & Sports Events Manager, Marcelo González, has been recognised with the 2025 Campbell Gill Bayley’s Community Heroes Award at the 2025 Marlborough Sports Awards.

This annual regional ceremony is Marlborough’s premier event celebrating both sporting excellence and exceptional community contribution. Among its key distinctions is the Community Heroes category, which honours individuals whose volunteer work, leadership, and commitment to social wellbeing make a meaningful difference in the community.

"Just being nominated for this prestigious award already made me feel like a winner, and hearing that I had been selected was such a wonderful surprise. Knowing that other people and organisations recognise and value the work we do gives you a real boost of energy to keep going," Marcelo said.

Marcelo's Achievements

Marcelo was selected for this award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to community development through his work at Stadium 2000 and the Marlborough Multicultural Centre. His efforts in creating and coordinating one of the region’s most inclusive and successful Health & Fitness programmes were highlighted as a major achievement.

"Today marks 3 years since the creation of this programme, and I want to thank the team at Stadium 2000 for believing in this project from the very start. A special thanks to Ricky White, with whom I had the first meeting, and from that moment a beautiful partnership was born, supporting so many families and individuals."

Marcelo’s recognition stems from his wide-ranging service to the Marlborough community, including:

• Coordinating cultural, recreational, and sporting programmes that bring together people from diverse backgrounds.
• Supporting migrant and former refugee families, including providing Spanish-language assistance
• Promoting cultural connection, social inclusion, and community wellbeing.
• Empowering migrant and ethnically diverse residents, reflecting MMC’s mission and values

Impact for MMC and the Community

While this award is a significant personal honour for Marcelo, it also reflects the wider impact of MMC’s work. It acknowledges the importance of cultural inclusion, support services, and community connection - core principles that guide the Marlborough Multicultural Centre every day.

This recognition celebrates not just Marcelo’s dedication but also the collective efforts of MMC staff, volunteers, partners, and community members who work together to make Marlborough a welcoming and inclusive region.

About Marcelo

Marcelo González arrived in Blenheim in January 2023 and has served as MMC’s Cultural and Sports Events Manager since. Previously, he managed recreational and competitive sports for over 10,000 students at Universidad de La Frontera in Temuco, Chile. Marcelo is also a Chilean and Latin American Folklore dance instructor and plays football for Rangers A.F.C.
