World Refugee Day - Marlborough Celebrates Stories of Resilience and Belonging

Although officially recognised on June 20th, Marlborough commemorated World Refugee Day on Friday, July 4th, after rescheduling due to Matariki and inclement weather. The event was a vibrant display of unity, resilience, and multicultural celebration, honouring the nearly 300 former refugees who now call Marlborough home.

The evening began with a Mihi Whakatau delivered by Paora Mackie from Rangitāne, followed by warm words of welcome from Mayor Nadine Taylor, setting the tone for a meaningful gathering.

Two community leaders, Wendy Iguaran from Colombia and Hasinah Kassim from the Rohingya community, shared their powerful stories of arrival and integration into New Zealand. A touching video documented their journey, reminding all present that once these families set foot in New Zealand, they were no longer refugees but valued community members.

Celebration followed storytelling, with moving performances by the children Rohingya singing group and a vibrant Colombian dance.

Attendees were then treated to a gastronomic showcase featuring traditional dishes, offering a taste of the cultures that now enrich Marlborough.

MMC extends sincere thanks to its partners and sponsors who made this educational and cultural event possible, especially the Marlborough District Council, New Zealand Red Cross, and community contributors as Rangitane o Wairau, Meaters Marlborough, ANZCO Foods, MRISE, Latino Trust, St. Mary’s Youth, Rohingya & Colombian Communities, MMC Volunteers.

Together, we honour the past, embrace the present, and celebrate a future of inclusion.
