Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa – Celebrating Filipino Language & Culture in Marlborough!
This August, communities across the globe are celebrating Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa (National Language Month), a time dedicated to promoting the richness of the Filipino language and culture. Here in Blenheim, the Filipino community is bringing this celebration to life with a vibrant afternoon of stories, songs, dances, and delicious food.
“Celebrating Filipino Language Week is very meaningful because language is more than just words, it carries our identity, history, and values. By celebrating it here in Blenheim, we not only strengthen the connection of Filipino children and families to their roots, but we also share our culture with the wider community. It is an opportunity to embrace diversity, promote cultural unity, and highlight how our languages enrich New Zealand’s multicultural identity,” said Randy B. Intong, Early Childhood Teacher who has been in Blenheim for 1 year and 3 months.
And celebrate they did! “Our celebration was filled with joy, connection, and pride. We showcased Filipino songs, dances, and stories, bringing together families and friends to celebrate our heritage. Children proudly participated in cultural activities, and the community came together to enjoy traditional food, music, and performances. It was a beautiful reminder of how culture can unite us all, no matter where we come from” Randy added.
