Ten months ago, Wickramaarachchi Appuhamilage Voshintha Iroshani arrived in Blenheim from Sri Lanka to join her husband, who had already made Marlborough his home. Building a new life in an unfamiliar country is never easy, but Voshintha brought with her a skill and a passion that had shaped her career for years: a talent for beauty and hairdressing.

In Sri Lanka, Voshintha was a qualified professional beautician and hairdresser who spent six years successfully running her own beauty salon. That entrepreneurial spirit and professional pride remain central to who she is today, even as she navigates the challenges of settling into a new community on the other side of the world.

Voshintha's connection to the Marlborough Multicultural Centre began, fittingly, at one of MMC's vibrant multicultural food and community events - the kind of gathering that has introduced so many newcomers to the warmth of Marlborough's multicultural community.

Voshintha points to MMC's conversational English speaking groups and multicultural gatherings as a lifeline, helping newcomers build confidence and make friends in their new home. Her hope is that MMC continues to expand these offerings - more English conversation sessions, more social events, and more job and career pathway guidance - to support other migrants making the same journey she has.

Looking ahead, Voshintha's goals are clear: keep improving her English, integrate fully into the Marlborough community, and rebuild her career in the beauty and hairdressing industry. She is optimistic about what MMC and the wider community can offer along the way, particularly networking opportunities, mentorship, and guidance on local business and employment pathways.

And her dream reaches further still. Voshintha hopes to one day re-establish her own beauty salon and hairdressing business in New Zealand, and to give back to the community that welcomed her when she needed it most.
